From the pandemic to different factions of protest, to being quarantined and outta work, it seemed like we had to hit the reset button and do some introspection. For us melanated folks purification is canalization of our relationship with nature. Whether it’s burning sage, playing the horn/drum, or simply chanting they all contribute to the cause which is itself, purification or “Odwira”.

African women' sisterhood is expressed in many ways coast to coast on a day to day basis, one of them is thru preparing food for the family as a group. This piece shows a very common way that African women blended spices and other ingredients before cooking.

ZAOULI
Zaouli is a traditional mask dance from the Guro people of Côte D’Ivoire that some say started 1950s (info needs double checkin). There are various different legends behind the origin of the dance, but the main one is that the dance was inspired by a beautiful girl named Djela Lou Zaouli, daughter of Zaouli.
Although always performed by men, the Zaouli dance represents feminine beauty. In Guro communities, the dance is performed at celebrations, special events, and funerals, and also in inter-village festivals and dance competitions

Rugby players from the islands address those guiding spirits through the Haka, a traditional Pacific Islander war dance.

A libation is a ritual pouring of a liquid such as liquor, or grains such as rice or salt, as an offering to a deity or spirit, or in memory of the dead. Mostly liquor is poured out, why Liquor?
